The purpose of the book of Hebrews is to present the Supremacy of Jesus Christ over the Old Covenant. First written to Jewish believers who were tempted to abandon their faith in Jesus as Messiah, the writer brings compelling arguments to demonstrate the superiority of the person and work of Jesus Christ.
The significance of this letter in our own hour which focuses on dreams, visions, prophecies and angelic appearances will strengthen and deepen one’s Christian pilgrimage. In a time of uncertainty and mounting persecution against one’s faith, the author of Hebrews paints the Christian life as a perilous journey fraught with dangers that need to be overcome. Raymond Brown points out: “In a day when many people may try to discern some form of acceptable syncretism [blending of religious ideas], whereby Christ and his gospel become merely one expression among others of the idea of salvation, Hebrews directs us to the uniqueness of Christ’s redemptive work.” Raymond Brown, ‘The Messiah of Hebrews,’ 21.
This ten-week course will explain not only the supremacy of Christ but the significance to our daily lives.
